The Woman in the Dunes (砂の女 Suna no onna, literally “Sand woman,” also translated as The Woman of the Dunes) is directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara and based on the novel of the same name by Kōbō Abe. It has received significant acclaim, winning the special jury prize at Cannes. I feel like I should have been aware of Woman in the Dunes. Midori Kanazawa, a celebrated Japanese actress active in television and film, will play the role of the woman in the dunes. Two years after The Face of Another and Pitfall, and seven years after I first fell asleep trying to watch it, I finally make it to/through Woman in the Dunes.
